Statement: Welcoming the Future Generations Report 2025

The Future Generations Commissioner for Wales’ has today published its new Future Generations Report 2025, challenging decision-makers across Wales to think differently on how they will deliver on the Well-being of Future Generations Act to protect the next generation.

Ceri Davies, Interim Chief Executive of Natural Resources Wales said:
“As we mark 10 years of the Well-Being of Future Generations Act, this milestone report is an important reminder of what we can achieve if we work together, across sectors and communities, to deliver lasting change for the people of Wales and our shared environment.
“We are particularly pleased to see that the Commissioner has placed restoring nature and decarbonisation at the heart of his calls to action. It is now well-recognised that becoming nature positive and achieving net zero is essential for safeguarding the well-being of future generations. The report echoes our firm belief that tackling the interconnected nature, climate and pollution emergencies will require bold leadership, collaborative effort, and a shared vision for a fairer, greener and more resilient Wales.
“We are also proud that our own interim State of Natural Resources Report (SoNaRR) has contributed to the Commissioner’s analysis. The evidence, insight and recommendations both of these reports provide will be vital for decision-makers as we move towards the next Senedd election in 2026 – a pivotal moment that must prioritise long-term thinking and action.
“These reports offer a robust and aligned evidence base to support the transformational decisions that will be needed to meet the climate, nature and pollution emergencies head-on.
“Over the lifetime of the Well-Being of Future Generations Act, we are proud to have seen projects like the National Peatland Action Programme, the LIFE projects and Natur am Byth spring into life and play their part in restoring nature and species.
“We are also strengthening our own approach to climate change through the development of our organisation wide Net Zero and Adaptation Plans, integrating sustainability and considering carbon footprint and climate risks and impacts in the decisions we make.
“We look forward to continuing our work with the Future Generations Commissioner, and working with partners across public and private sectors to put these recommendations into action, and to continue building a Wales that works not just for today – but for generations to come.”
